Critical Illness Insurance

Do you ever think about what might happen if you become critically ill and unable to work? Probably not. It’s the type of think most of us think only happens to others… until disaster strikes, and you’re unprepared for the fallout.

Critical illness insurance Canada

In the event of a serious illness, critical illness insurance provides you and your family with the protection you need so you can focus on making a healthy recovery. It is a relatively new type of health insurance designed to manage the risk associated with contracting certain dreaded diseases. Even though mortality rates are falling, the number of people with critical illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, and stroke, is increasing.

A CI policy pays a lump-sum benefit to the insured if the insured is diagnosed with any critical illness covered in the policy and, for most conditions covered, is still living 30 days after the diagnosis. The benefit may be used in whatever way the insured wishes.

Critical illness policies are most commonly used to remove the financial burden once the insured becomes critically ill and is unable to work. In this context, it will be used to provide the necessities of life, not to fulfill an item in the dream list.

The policy differs from life insurance in that the benefit is paid directly to the insured. Unlike disability insurance, there is no requirement for earned income. Depending on the critical illness insurance package you select, coverage can include events such as cancer, heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, paralysis and more.
